Strategic, Not Political
As our work extends beyond women’s football toward larger strategic objectives and a different range of clients, it is worth stating plainly what readers and clients should expect from us. Our work has always been apolitical, and it will continue to be. The scope of the problems we address has changed; the nature of our work has not.
Our method begins in the same place regardless of the client or the domain. What is the organization trying to accomplish? What effects are required to accomplish it? What capabilities produce those effects, what does the organization actually possess, and what remains uncovered? None of those questions asks whether an objective is favored by any party, faction, or ideology. They ask whether the objective is clearly defined, whether the means available are suited to it, and where the gaps are. The client owns the objective. Our responsibility is to help clarify it and to assess honestly what achieving it will require.
Being apolitical does not mean pretending that political conditions do not exist. They can form part of the environment a client operates in, in the same way that budgets, regulation, personnel, and time do. Where they do, we account for them as we would any other constraint. Accounting for a constraint is not the same as taking a side on it.
Clients should expect analysis that is grounded in their objectives, their environment, and their actual constraints. They should expect us to separate what we observe from what we infer, and to state where the evidence is incomplete. They should not expect us to advocate for parties, candidates, or policy positions, or to shape findings toward a preferred political conclusion. Readers should expect the same standard in everything we publish, and should be able to apply our analysis regardless of their own political views, because the analysis does not depend on those views to hold.
The problems we work on have grown larger, and the organizations we work with have become more varied. What we bring to them remains the same: a disciplined way of understanding what needs to be accomplished, what it will take, and what remains uncovered. That work has always been apolitical, and it will remain so.
